Mission

The main objective of the project of Campaign for Fundamental Rights in Ukraine through Instruments of the International Human Rights Documentary Festival Docudays UA: to increase the level of legal consciousness and awareness of citizens of Ukraine in sphere of human rights by providing human rights defenders, pedagogues, civil society leaders, employees of penitentiary system with media instruments and methodology for creation of constantly acting film clubs of media education in human rights Docudays UA.

 

Specific aims:

1) create a network of permanent Docudays UA human rights media education film clubs in schools, universities, youth NGOs, Euroclubs, libraries, corrective labor colonies and educational facilities of the penitentiary system;

2) engage human rights NGOs to work in the network of permanent Docudays UA human rights media education film clubs;

3) develop and implement methods of using documentary human rights films for educational activities among youth;

4) develop and implement methods of using documentary human rights films for training future penitentiary workers;

5) create the Docudays UA human rights media education online resource center and a film library of the best Docudays UA documentaries.

 

The project will be realized in 19 oblasts of Ukraine: Vinnytsia, Volyn, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Zhytomyr, Zaporizhia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Kyiv, Kirovohrad, Lviv, Luhansk, Odessa, Poltava, Sumy, Ternopil, Kharkiv, Kherson, Chernivtsi, Chernihiv oblasts, as well as the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. It will involve civic activists, senior high school and university students, educators, human rights defenders, workers of corrective labor colonies and educational facilities of the penitentiary system.

 

Activities within the framework of the project:

1. Organization of a two-day International conference “Documentary human rights films as an instrument of media education”.

2. Creation of the Docudays UA human rights media education online resource center on the website www.docudays.org.ua.

3. Creation of an online film library with the best Docudays UA documentaries on the website www.docudays.org.ua.

4. Starting a Facebook page “Docudays UA human rights media education center”.

5. Compilation of special collections with at least 20 documentaries concerning specific human rights for target audiences, and their distribution among the Docudays UA film clubs.

6. Selection and distribution of Ukrainian documentary films (at least 8) – success stories of ordinary people, members of local communities – for discussions with audience, film protagonists and civic leaders who helped them protect their rights.

7. Development of a method book “Documentary human rights films as an instrument of media education”, a thematically annotated catalogue of film collections and a DVD edition.

8. Development of scripts of educational events for every selected film (discussion, interactive game, forum theater, round table, workshop, performance, etc.)

9. Selection of 10 school teams, 10 university teams, 10 teams representing youth NGOs, libraries and Euroclubs in 2014 and as many in 2015. Seminar training, competency test, providing technical and mentor assistance. Creation of 60 new Docudays UA film clubs.

10. Selection of 10 teams from corrective labor colonies. Seminar training, competency test, providing technical and mentor assistance. Creation of 10 new Docudays UA film clubs in colonies.

11. Selection of 5 teams from educational facilities of the penitentiary system. Seminar training, competency test, providing technical and mentor assistance. Creation of five new Docudays UA film clubs in educational facilities of the penitentiary system.

12. Development of a set of 6 interactive educational events based on documentary human rights films and tested in educational facilities of the penitentiary system. Proposal to the Ministry of Education and the State Penitentiary Service of Ukraine to include these events to the training programs for future penitentiary workers.

13. Creation of a network of human rights experts, including representatives of NGOs, Ombudsman’s office, the Ministry of Justice and the Penitentiary system of Ukraine for participation in the work of permanent Docudays UA film clubs. Development of a feedback system, providing organizers of the Docudays UA film clubs with a possibility to consult experts and involve them in educational events.

14. Distribution of information about the project via the festival website www.docudays.org.ua, Facebook page, festival newspaper, festival press center (press releases, interviews for mass media), social networks, websites of partner NGOs, the Ministry of Justice, the State Penitentiary Service, the Ministry of Family, Youth and Sport, newsletters of human rights and youth organizations, professional newsletters of educators, mass media, etc.

 

Expected outcomes:

 1. Innovative educational methods involving screenings of documentary human rights films will become available to Ukrainian educators, human rights defenders and civic activists.

2. Creation of 75 permanent Docudays UA human rights media education film clubs in schools (20), universities (20), youth NGOs, Euroclubs and libraries (20), penitentiary institutions (10) and their educational facilities (5) will provide a unique wide-scale discussion platform for reflection on socially significant issues concerning different aspects of human rights.

3. At least 50,000 school and university students including future penitentiary workers will get acquainted with at least 48 NGOs and will get a chance to join them.

4. Organization of 520 round tables and discussions in permanent Docudays UA film clubs and during the Docudays UA Traveling Festival in 2014-2015 will encourage dialogue on human rights in the Ukrainian society.

5. Students of 5 educational institutions of the penitentiary system will learn more about human rights and in the future will be able to conduct a civilized dialogue with prisoners in a legal framework.

6. Prisoners and personnel of at least 10 corrective labor camps in Ukraine will get a chance to watch films on human rights and discuss them with human rights activists and experts.

7. NGOs will get a wider access to corrective labor camps and will be able to provide more service, establish cooperation with personnel, carry out more quality monitoring and make proposals about reforming the penitentiary system, which will facilitate bringing the practice in line with the standards of human rights observance.

8. During realization of the project and the Docudays UA International Documentary Human Rights Film Festival in 2014-2015, at least 300,000 citizens of Ukraine will gain new knowledge about effective mechanisms and practices of human rights protection.
